Teeth grinding is something we all do from time to time but excessive grinding of the teeth can be very damaging in the long run. People who excessively grind their teeth are at risk of permanent and costly damage to their teeth.

What is bruxism?

Medically, the term bruxism describes the condition where a person involuntarily and habitually grinds their teeth, especially in their sleep. It’s actually considered a sleep related movement disorder in most cases.

What are the effects of bruxism?

The long term effects of teeth grinding from bruxism can include

  • Worn teeth to the point where expensive dental intervention is required
  • Cracked teeth which again requires dental intervention or may result in abscesses
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Pain and stiffness in the jaw

How do we treat bruxism?

By using anti-wrinkle injections, the very same used in cosmetic treatments, we can reduce the activity of the muscles that cause this grinding, and therefore reduce the amount of grinding you do. This will have a great impact on your dental health.

Small amounts of product are injected into the masseter muscles which cause the movements that lead to grinding.

How long will my result last?

Generally, lower doses are used in this treatment so longevity is reduced when compared with other treatments using muscle relaxing injections. Typically, 3 months can be expected but this is patient dependent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Grinding teeth, also known as bruxism, is a condition characterized by the involuntary clenching, gnashing, or grinding of teeth. It can occur during the day (awake bruxism) or at night during sleep (sleep bruxism). Grinding teeth can cause various dental and health problems if left untreated.

To address grinding teeth, treatment options may include:

  • Stress management techniques: Since stress and anxiety can contribute to teeth grinding, finding ways to relax and manage stress levels can be beneficial.
  • Mouthguards or splints: A dentist can custom-fit a mouthguard or splint that is worn during sleep to protect the teeth and alleviate the pressure caused by grinding.
  • Behavioral therapy: In some cases, behavior modification techniques, such as habit-reversal therapy, can be used to help individuals become aware of the grinding habit and learn techniques to redirect the behavior.

The exact cause of sleep bruxism is not fully understood, but it is believed to be a combination of multiple factors. Some potential causes include:

  • Abnormal bite alignment: Misaligned teeth or issues with the jaw structure can contribute to teeth grinding during sleep.
  • Stress and anxiety: Increased stress levels or anxiety can lead to teeth grinding, particularly during sleep when individuals may have less control over their actions.
  • Sleep disorders: Sleep-related disorders such as snoring, or restless leg syndrome may be associated with teeth grinding.
  • Medications and substances: Certain medications, such as antidepressants or stimulants, as well as the use of alcohol or caffeine, can increase the likelihood of teeth grinding during sleep.

Teeth grinding can sometimes be associated with sleep apnea, a sleep disorder characterized by interrupted breathing during sleep. However, not all individuals who grind their teeth have sleep apnea, and not all individuals with sleep apnea grind their teeth. If you suspect you have sleep apnea or are experiencing symptoms such as loud snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, or pauses in breathing during sleep, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and diagnosis.

Teeth grinding can have multiple causes, including:

  • Stress and anxiety: Psychological factors, such as stress, anxiety, or tension, can contribute to teeth grinding.
  • Malocclusion: Misalignment of the teeth or jaws can lead to grinding as the individual tries to find a more comfortable position for their bite.
  • Lifestyle factors: Certain lifestyle habits, such as excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption, smoking, or recreational drug use, can be associated with teeth grinding.

Yes, grinding teeth can sometimes cause mouth sores. The excessive pressure and friction from teeth grinding can irritate the soft tissues inside the mouth, leading to the formation of mouth sores or ulcers. These sores may cause discomfort or pain and can take some time to heal.

Yes. The excessive strain on the jaw muscles and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) caused by grinding teeth can lead to tension headaches or migraines. The muscle tension and inflammation can radiate pain to the head, resulting in headaches.

Yes, teeth grinding can occur in children as well. In fact, it is relatively common among children, especially during the development of their baby and permanent teeth. Most children outgrow teeth grinding without intervention, and it typically does not cause long-term damage. However, if teeth grinding persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, it is advisable to consult with a pediatric dentist or healthcare professional for evaluation and guidance.

Yes, teeth grinding can contribute to tooth sensitivity. The constant grinding and clenching of teeth can wear down the enamel, the protective outer layer of the teeth. As a result, the underlying dentin, which contains microscopic tubules that connect to the tooth’s nerve endings, may become exposed, leading to increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and beverages

Yes, it can potentially cause damage to dental restorations. The excessive force and repetitive motion can lead to wear, fractures, or dislodgment of the restorations.

At Amara we only use the highest quality products which is why we use Allergan's anti-wrinkle product and not a cheaper biosimilar (generic) product. It is FDA approved and the most studied of its kind which means we can stand by its clinical profile.

My mom and I went here recently for hydra facials and were so impressed! Everything was explained in detail with plenty of time allocated to the appointment, no rushing, absolutely no hard sell on products and kind service all the way around! My mom saw Gráinne and I saw Julia - both of them were amazing and got us set up with routines that are suitable and simple to follow. Skin is glowing! Robin at reception was so helpful and friendly and got us booked in again for follow ups - can’t wait!

I have had quite a few Hydrafacials at different clinics in Dublin, and back home in Copenhagen as well, but this clinic is so far the best. The therapist was lovely and she just really knew what she was doing. She made me feel very comfortable and relaxed while guiding me through the treatment.I also had a lot of questions regarding skin care and products because I have had some problems with acne and she took her time to answer all my questions without making me feel pressured to buy the products she was recommending me, which is important to me.I found my visit to the clinic to be excellent. The staff was welcoming and well-trained.Most importantly, my skin just felt and looked amazing afterwards.

I love this clinic!! I have been going here for over 5 years and although it is a huge trek for me I won’t ever go anywhere else for my skincare. The doctors and staff are so friendly and helpful and I cannot stress this point enough. I am not the kind of girl that gets regular facials or would follow a strict 6 step nightly skin regime. In fact, I would normally find this type of place daunting because I often feel judgement for not “being better” with this stuff. At Amara I have never felt like this. Everyone there always makes me feel so comfortable and genuinely wants to help me feel the best I can. I haven’t yet mentioned the results which are always incredible from the few things I’ve had done there . I am always so happily surprised by the results and the clinic is always so amazing with follow up appointments if necessary. I cannot vouch enough for this clinic!

From the moment you enter the clinic, you are greeted with lovely staff, the atmosphere is very calm and welcoming.A huge thank you to Siobhan for doing my hydrafacial, she made me feel very comfortable. Before the treatment she thoroughly explained the process and it's very evident that she is passionate in the work she does, she kept me informed of my facial every step of the way, and helped target my skin concerns along with great product recommendations. After my facial, I could instantly notice the difference on my skin.I will definitely reccomend amara clinic to my girlfriends and I look forward to coming back for more treatments. Thanks again!Ahlam
An unusual but very important review....Amara was very highly recommended to me by a colleague. I purchased a €2,000 voucher from Amara for my wife as a 50th birthday present. Needless to say, she was ecstatic. Due to Covid 19 financial difficulties, we reluctantly decided not to utilise the voucher and to request a refund....6 months later. These are terribly difficult times for businesses, so I felt more than a little embarassed and not very hopeful. I am 50 years old and have been around the block a few times, I have never encountered such professionalism and simple humanity. Never a question, I was fully refunded to my huge relief and complete satisfaction. This company clearly has a wonderful and primary customer care ethos. Their top, middle and bottom line is customer care - pure class. Sincerely, thank you Ronan and your team. We most certainly will be back.

My first visit to Amara (it won't be the last!) was excellent. Paul has such an easy manner, I felt very comfortable and at ease immediately. Everything was explained in detail so I knew exactly what was being done and why. There was no pushy sales technique - if anything it is evident that they will only do work that will benefit you - you won't pay for unnecessary treatments and any treatments you do have will be done with an emphasis on looking natural rather than 'done'. Very happy.

I can recommend Amara.Carolina makes you feel very welcome as soon as you arrive at this clinic.I had an Hydrafacial with Joanie that I will definitely indulge in again and also availed of her advice on their range of skin care products.I felt reassured by Dr Pauls pleasant unrushed manner and in particular with his conservative approach and natural results. He takes the time to explain what he is doing and why he thinks you need it which I like.I will definitely return.

I have been to Amara clinic a few times and the experience is always great. Today I had a Hydrafacial with Siobhan and I couldn't recommend it more. She took the time to review my skin routine, habits and explained to me the science behind our skin. The facial itself was great and my skin is feeling amazing. I will definitely be back!

Friendly, helpful staff that seem genuine.I didn't feel 'pushed' into buying products / services (which is what usually happens!)I am THAT person that asks LOTS of questions - *pedantic *, I see detail in everything and easily pick flaws, but was grateful for the professionalism here. Appreciated they listened and answered my dozen questions... Usually dont take the time to write reviews but the clinic followed up with a text and I figure they deserve it! Thanks Guys - I will be back :-)
I'm more than thrilled about my decsion to go to Amara for lip fillers. I've been researching for a few years but was always to nervous to follow through with the procedure. Dr. Paul is very thorough and honest. He explained everything he would do to achieve the desired result. I asked him for subtlety and thats exactly what I received. I couldn't be happier with my filler treatment and my lips look 100% natural, which was exactly what I wanted. Thank you so much Dr. Paul!
I had my first hyrdafacial treatment here, and loved it so much I’ve already booked another! The treatment itself is amazing, my skin was left feeling wonderful, and the benefits were noticeable straight away, and I my skin was noticeably soft and smooth for several weeks after the treatment. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. My therapist Joanie was lovely, and incredibly knowledgeable of the whole process, and really thorough when reviewing my skin needs. I would highly recommend the whole experience with Amara :)
