Frequently Asked Questions

+ - What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterized by excessive sweating beyond what is necessary for normal body temperature regulation. It can affect various parts of the body, including the palms, soles of the feet, underarms, and face. This condition can significantly impact a person's daily life, causing discomfort, embarrassment, and interference with social and professional activities.

+ - What causes hyperhidrosis?

The exact cause of hyperhidrosis is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve overactive sweat glands and an overstimulation of the nervous system. Hyperhidrosis can be attributed to underlying medical conditions, such as hormonal imbalances, certain medications, infections, or other underlying health issues. It could also be hereditary.

+ - How to treat hyperhidrosis?

There are several treatment options available for hyperhidrosis, ranging from conservative measures to medical interventions. These include:

  • Antiperspirants: Strong antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride can be applied to the affected areas to reduce sweating.
  • Medications: Certain oral medications, such as anticholinergics, can help reduce sweating. However, they may have side effects and are usually reserved for more severe cases.
  • Injections: Botulinum toxin injections can be administered in the affected areas to block the nerve signals that trigger sweating. This treatment can provide relief for several months.
  • Iontophoresis: This procedure involves immersing the affected areas in water while a low electrical current is passed through them. It is commonly used for excessive sweating in the hands and feet.
  • Surgery: In severe cases, surgical options like sweat gland removal, sympathectomy (nerve interruption), or laser therapy may be considered.
+ - Is hyperhidrosis a disability?

Hyperhidrosis is not typically classified as a disability in a legal sense. However, it can significantly impact a person's quality of life and ability to perform certain activities. If hyperhidrosis causes significant functional impairment or limits your ability to work, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or legal expert to understand your rights and explore possible accommodations or support.

+ - Is hyperhidrosis genetic?

There is evidence suggesting that primary hyperhidrosis, which often starts in adolescence, may have a genetic component. It tends to run in families, indicating a potential genetic predisposition. However, more research is needed to fully understand the genetic factors involved in hyperhidrosis.

+ - Can hyperhidrosis come on suddenly?

Hyperhidrosis can occur suddenly in some cases, especially in secondary hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis may be triggered by underlying medical conditions, medications, hormonal changes, or infections.

+ - Can acupuncture help hyperhidrosis?

Acupuncture is an ancient practice rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, where thin needles are gently inserted into precise points on the body. While acupuncture is often used for various conditions, including symptom management, there is limited scientific evidence to support its effectiveness in treating hyperhidrosis. More research is needed to determine the potential benefits and efficacy of acupuncture specifically for hyperhidrosis.

+ - Can anxiety cause hyperhidrosis?

Anxiety and emotional stress can contribute to episodes of excessive sweating, including hyperhidrosis. The connection between anxiety and sweating is often related to the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which controls the body's stress response. This activation can lead to increased sweat production. However, it is important to note that anxiety-induced sweating is typically a temporary response and not considered true hyperhidrosis.

+ - Can hyperhidrosis be triggered by certain foods or drinks?

Hyperhidrosis is primarily a physiological condition related to overactive sweat glands and the nervous system. However, some individuals may experience triggers for excessive sweating, including certain foods or drinks. It is important to note that these triggers can vary from person to person, and not everyone with hyperhidrosis will have specific dietary triggers.

+ - Can hyperhidrosis be managed through lifestyle changes alone?

Lifestyle modifications can play a supportive role in managing hyperhidrosis, especially in mild cases. However, for individuals with more severe or persistent symptoms, lifestyle changes alone may not be sufficient to effectively manage the condition. While measures like wearing breathable clothing, avoiding triggers, practicing stress-reduction techniques, and maintaining good hygiene can help reduce sweating to some extent, medical interventions such as medications, injections, or surgical options may be necessary for more significant relief.

I had my fourth and last Exion treatment with Amara on Wednesday this week - the first three were... taken care of by Roisin, who was brilliant and gentle, and also always receptive to feedback and helpful with any concerns I had later. All the ladies in the clinic have always been warm and welcoming too. I was happy with the quality of the treatment and was looking forward to leaving a five-star review, but unfortunately feel compelled to take a star off because of how a genuine concern from my end was dealt with after my last treatment.Julie was assigned to administer my last treatment and on account of having had bruises on my skin after, I texted the clinic with my concerns and relevant photos (like I always did before, if there were any). Having been used to polite communication from Amara, it was a shock to receive a phone call from Julie where she was blatantly condescending. I don't take her tone and words personally because it was clear that she took my concern personally, which isn't on me. A basic customer concern had turned into her telling me that everything had already been outlined for me, I'd have to just be patient until my skin recovered and she has already told me all she could, assuming and claiming that I was unhappy because I had been used to a different aesthetician until then and most shocking of all -- how senior she is at the salon. She also went to the extent of asking me whether I had understood what she had said - I do not take that attitude from anyone, let alone someone I have paid to administer a service. She was so insistent on proving that she wasn't in the wrong that I wasn't even given a fair chance to speak - just had a load of her own assumptions thrown at me. When I highlighted this to her, she said that she called as soon as she saw my text and was trying to help by discussing my moisturising routine (which I have been aware of ever since I started getting the treatment). She also went on to tell me that she had discussed a product with me when I was in that I should really have been using since the beginning - because apparently my skin tone is more prone to hyperpigmentation post treatment - and also blamed my skin's reaction on me having had itchy eyes by saying it was because I had "hay fever" (which I never did) and high cortisol/stress levels. By the end, I felt like I was having to reassure her rather than her reassuring me. Phew.It was an exhausting conversation to have as a customer already stressed about my skin. She offered to have me go in to the clinic and put me under the lights to calm any redness if, in her words, "it would give me any peace of mind", but she kept denying the fact that it could be bruising (it most certainly is - I am not a professional aesthetician but I do know my skin better than anyone else), and also apologised "if" I felt a certain way. This whole interaction has quite obviously deterred me from returning. This is a shame, and irrespective, I maintain my stance - as already highlighted to the staff at the clinic - that my skin hasn't had this strong a reaction to the same treatment before.I think it's basic customer care etiquette to be receptive to feedback, and this was certainly not in line with the decorum and maturity expected of a staff member who claims to be so senior. Seniority also means nothing to me as I would be happier receiving better service and more respectful communication from someone who was newer. It was very disappointing that she had made it all about her, when none of it was. It's a pity that my last interaction with the clinic has left me with such a bitter taste in my mouth.read more

From the amazing reception to leaving the clinic, this was a 100% enjoyable experience. Kelly and... Barbara on the reception are just pure joy, friendly, professional, and beyond welcoming. I had booked a hydra facial with Julie (more on that later) and a consultation with Dr Paul to discuss what I would like to have done.I was nervous and not sure what I would like to have done, also very nervous of been talked into treatment that I was not sure about. After a great informative chat with Dr Paul, I decided on profhilo as I was too nervous to go for Botox. I really respect that there was no pressure or hard sell. Just lots of good advice.Three months now and I am really happy with the profhilo, it has definitely moisturised my skin and evened out my skin tone.Hydra facial with Julie. This is one of my favourite treatments, the finish result is amazing skin, glowing clear complexion. Julie is a skin specialist, who educates you while working away with little gems of knowledge.I love going to the clinic not just for the facial, she is just the loveliest therapist and love the chats.Sorry for the long winded review, but I am so glad I came to the Amara clinic the whole team are simply amazing. So glad I found this place and very happy with the big improvement in my skin.Thank youLouise McCaberead more
