This is one of the most commonly inquired about conditions at Amara. Our Skin Health Specialists see people with this concern every week.
The by product of ill-treated or unaddressed acne, acne scars that look minor in adolescence can actually become more prominent as we age for a couple of reasons. These unsightly blemishes can have a major impact on people’s social lives when severed enough. Luckily, although hard to treat, there are a number of treatment options available for people who have this concern.
If you wish to avoid acne scarring, prevention should be part of your skin care regime.
What are acne scars?
Acne scars are texture based blemishes of the skin that result because of acne and aggravating active acne, particularly by picking at it. They are not to be confused with acne marks which have hyper-pigmentation at the root of their cause. This makes acne a structural problem of the skin rather than a pigmental issue, which is an important distinction when it comes to treating and preventing it.
Why do acne scars happen?
Acne scars form because of an inflammatory event (acne) and an incorrect healing response from the body (collagen is over, under or incorrectly produced).
- Raised acne scars (bumpy scars) are the result of overproduction of collagen as the body tries to repair the skin damage done by acne.
- Pitted acne scars (crater scars) are the result of underproduction of collagen as the body responds to acne breakouts.
By interfering with the healing process by picking or squeezing pimples and spots, you increase the chances of acne scarring.
What increases the chances of acne scarring?
The likelihood of acne scarring is increased by –
- Not addressing acne breakouts effectively or not at all
- Picking and popping acne pimples or cysts during a breakout
- Breakouts occurring in rapid succession which doesn’t allow the respite from inflammation – over time this will cause scarring
Prevention is the best form of defense when it comes to acne scarring.
I didn’t have bad acne scars when I was a teen but as an adult they’re worse…
Delayed scarring – some people leave adolescence believing they’ve escaped acne scarring only to find it appears late in their 20’s.
This happens because structural components of your skin start to deplete with age. This results in volume loss that brings out scars that were there but hidden by your skins more youthful volume.
